Paterson (2016)

Well, this movie has to be the world’s most cynical take on art: it’s gonna be shit anyway, so why even bother….

Or maybe it was a brilliant juxtaposition of form and substance:

a movie about a terrible poet in the form of one of his abhorrent poems being turned into its cinematic equivalent.

Avoid!

And they locked that poor dog in the garage for eating that guys notebook. I’m probably exactly like the characters Jim Jarmusch, the director and writer of the movie, makes fun of in this one. Maybe that's why i didn't like it.  What a dark two hours that was….maybe it was the movie i deserve right now, but not the one i needed.

A truly gut wrenching experience! I’m not even gonna google it, because i’m sure it has something like 7,9/10 on IMDB (maybe even more, what a horrible thought!). That other Jim said it well: "people are strange..." Hey, maybe that was the point of this movie! Well done!

What did that one character say again in Zoolander? Oh yeah….

I FEEL LIKE I’M TAKING CRAZY PILLS!!!!”

Prove me wrong, i dare you! What did i miss so completely on this one? This movie is now at number one on my list! And i won't tell you what kind of a list it is that i'm talking about here.

Or...."Wait for it! Wait for it!"....or maybe, maybe i'm just stupid. Maybe I don’t realize how Jarmusch truly challenges the conventions of cinema - and the whole art of storytelling - with this one: with how it is basically an anti-drama and how it simply refuses to be a story....even a dull one.

Then again, maybe this movie was about depression and tried to convey it in, not only its substance matter, but also its overall execution and cinematic style. In that case it was a success. At least it succeeded in depressing me.....

P.S.

On the subject of movies about art and art in movies i've yet to see The Square (2017), which i have heard is good. I surely do remember one movie about art and the art world though: Velvet Buzzsaw (2019). Now this movie.......oh, boy.........

Velvet Buzzsaw is a movie that Paterson guy should dedicate an entire book of poems to. Go and watch it, i dare you! Just a little warning: you might lose your self dignity in the process though. You know, i've seen things...things you people wouldn't believe. Eminem on fire off the shoulder of Vanilla Ice in Da Hip Hop Witch (2000). I watched Secret Obsession (2019) glitter on a TV-screen in the dark corner of a living room. Next to it lay DVD:s containing Cursed (2005) by Wes Craven and In The Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007), by none other than Mr. Uwe Boll himself. But all those absolute horrors pale in comparison with what i saw in Velvet Buzzsaw. Time to turn off, tune out...

P.P.S.

"Dear Ancient Evil: Scream of the Mummy (1999) by David DeCoteau,

I know how lonely you must have felt all these years, sitting there all alone on that special shelf, separated from all the other DVD:s. I have good news for you! I am quite certain i have found someone to share that shelf with you. Its name is Velvet Buzzsaw. I am sure you two will become great friends!

P.P.P.S.

Now it wouldn't be fair of me to slander a movie about a poet, lest i presented to you a poem of my own. So here i go and you may be as brutal on me as i was on Jarmusch and his Paterson.

Now i remember that guy

James Joyce

That guy wrote about his miseries and joys

James Joyce

Him yes, do you think he ever had a choice?

That guy, James Joyce

When he wrote about his miseries and joys

Just a guy, called James Joyce

It makes my my heart sing

And rejoice

When i think about that guy

James Joyce

How he was so brave and talked in so many words

About his miseries and joys

So a guy like me could read them

And rejoice

Feeling a bit better

Than that poor James Joyce

Who never really had choice

When it came to all those miseries and joys

He went through

As a guy called James Joyce

Simply because he was just a guy

He never even had a choice

To be anyone else

Besides, James Joyce

P.P.P.P.S.

I'm reading the autobiography of Roger Miret (My Riot: Agnostic Front, Grits, Guts & Glory) from 2019. For those of you who don't know, here is a news bulletin' on NYHC: Miret is the singer of the legendary and influential hardcore punk band Agnostic Front. His half brother is Freddy Cricien a.k.a. Freddy Madball, who is the singer in the legendary hardcore punk band Madball. As i read the book i learned that as children they both lived in Paterson, New Jersey. Isn't that cool!?
